Working with Characters and Symbols
We use symbols and characters daily - we use them, and we read them on screen or on paper. We use text-processing program routinely,
much like people used typewriters, pens or other writing tools. How could characters or symbols creat problems?
Why do we need to know about Characters or Symbols? If English is your native language, you are accustomed to using a small set of
characters or symbols, consisting of the letters A-Z and a-z, digits 0-9, and a few punctuation characters.
Most books novels, newspapers articles and memos contain no other characters. Since you seem to be able to type these characters
directly on a keyboard, why should you learn more about characters and symbols and get confused?
To be honest, symbol character issues are confusing. Characters are normally represented in graphic form, as somthing that
can be called an image.
However, there is a fundamental difference between an image and a character. An image can be a particular rendering of a
character, much like a spoken word is a particular presentation of an element of a language.
Moreover, most images are not renderings of characters.
The Character code standards mostly identify a symbol as a character only ifit is actually used in texts - For example,
in books, magazines, newspapers, and electronic documents PDF.
